Golf Fore the Hungry
Golf Fore the Hungry is not just another golf event but an opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of others. Hunger is an issue that touches so many lives; whether in our community or around the world. Golf Fore the Hungry was created to raise awareness and to provide individuals, businesses and churches an outlet to work together to create global impact.
Since its inception in 2004, this two-day event has raised more than $167,000 for God’s Pantry Food Bank and Food for the Hungry, an international hunger relief agency. The inaugural event in 2004 raised $17,000 and included a hole-in-one on the 186-yard par 3 No. 8 by Tom Broadus, which won him a new Toyota Camry from Toyota on Nicholasville.
The 2005 event saw earnings top $25,000 as a very successful dinner and auction were added to the schedule the night before the golf event. A field of 132 golfers then took to the Marriott Golf Course to cap the festivities. The event was moved to the Cherry Blossom Golf Golf & Country Club in 2006 and had a full field of 144 golfers, raising more than $38,000. Due to the event’s substantial growth, Golf Fore the Hungry was moved to the University Club of Kentucky in 2007. The 36-hole course was utilized to create more opportunities to participate and faster play. The field of 170 golfers enjoyed a great afternoon and raised more than $29,000, pushing the events total fundraising over the $100,000 mark.
Despite bad weather in 2008, for the second time in the event’s five-year history, a hole-in-one was scored. Tom Frances hit his hole-in-one on Big Blue #8 and won a 2-year lease on a Pontiac G5 from Courtesy Pontiac. More than $25,000 was raised in 2008. The 2009 event was the best yet with God’s Pantry Food Bank receiving $32,500.
